Mayl is the verbal noun of the verb māla, meaning to lean or incline, from the Semitic root m-y-l. The root carries the sense of bending or tilting away from an upright or straight line. Arabic extended the physical idea of a slope or tilt to mental and moral leanings: a tendency, a fondness, or a bias. It is unrelated to māl, wealth, which comes from the separate root m-w-l.
