Etymology

إِقامَة is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَقامَ, "to make stand, to set up, to reside." It derives from the Semitic root q-w-m, "to stand, to rise." The middle weak letter waw collapses, and the feminine ending ة compensates for the lost long vowel, giving إِقامَة rather than the regular إِقْوام.
