Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root خ-ز-ن, meaning to store or hoard. It is formed on the pattern of a noun of place, so it names the place where things are kept. Through medieval trade and the Arab presence in the Mediterranean, the word passed into European languages, where it gave 'magazine', 'magasin', and 'almacén'.
