مَكانplaceEtymology
إِمْكان is the verbal noun of the form IV verb أَمْكَنَ, 'to make possible' or 'to be possible'. It is built on the root م-ك-ن, which Arabic grammarians treat as an extension of the older Semitic root ك-و-ن, 'to be' or 'to be firmly set'. The same root family gives مَكان ('place') and مُمْكِن ('possible'). The pattern إِفْعال supplies the abstract sense of an act or its result.
