From the triliteral root ح-س-ب (ḥ-s-b), 'to count, reckon, suffice.' The noun حَسْب means a measure or reckoning, and in the adverbial accusative it came to mark 'by the measure of,' that is, 'according to.' The same root gives حِساب, 'account,' and حاسوب, 'computer.'
