Etymology
عاش comes from the Semitic root ع-ي-ش, which carries the sense of living and earning a living. It is a hollow verb: the weak middle radical ي appears as a long ā in the past tense and as ī in the present, يعيش. The same root gives عَيْش, meaning sustenance or, in Egyptian Arabic, bread. There is no Indo-European connection, since Arabic is a Semitic language.
