Etymology

زوجة is the feminine of زوج (zawj), which means a pair, a yoke, or one of a couple, and by extension a spouse. The form is built on the Semitic root ز-و-ج. Many scholars argue that زوج itself entered Arabic early as a loan from Greek ζεῦγος, 'yoke, pair,' probably through Aramaic. The feminine ending ة then marked the female partner, giving the sense 'wife.'
