Etymology

رَأْي is the verbal noun of the verb رَأَى, 'to see.' Arabic extended the sense from physical sight to mental sight, so the word came to mean a view held in the mind, an opinion. The triliteral root ر-أ-ي carries the idea of seeing and perceiving across a family of related words. It is a native Semitic root with no Indo-European source.
