Etymology
The word comes from the root و-ج-ب (w-j-b), which carries the sense of necessity or obligation. The Form IV verb أَوْجَبَ means to make something necessary or to affirm it, and its verbal noun إِيجاب means affirmation. Adding the nisba suffix -ي turns that noun into the adjective إِيجابِيّ. Modern Arabic uses it as the standard opposite of سَلْبِيّ (negative), a pairing that took hold during the 19th and 20th century modernization of Arabic scientific and philosophical vocabulary.
