Etymology

The word comes from the root ج-ر-د (j-r-d), which carries the sense of stripping or peeling bare. In classical usage, جريدة first named a palm frond stripped of its leaflets, a plain stalk used for writing or as a stick. From that image of a bare, flat strip, the word later came to mean a sheet, and in the modern era it settled on its current sense of a printed newspaper.
