Etymology
الَّذِي is a relative pronoun formed from the definite article ال fused with an ancient Semitic demonstrative element ذِي (akin to ذُو 'possessor of, having'). It is inherently masculine singular and stands in a paradigm with feminine الَّتِي and masculine plural الَّذِينَ. The demonstrative base goes back to a Proto-Semitic deictic consonant *ḏ found across the Semitic family; it has no Indo-European origin.
