بَرىto sharpen, to whittle

Etymology

The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ب-ر-ي (b-r-y), whose Form I sense is to sharpen or whittle, as with a reed pen. The Form III pattern فاعَل adds a long vowel after the first radical to mark a mutual or contending action, so the meaning shifts to measuring oneself against another. From the same root Arabic built مُباراة, the ordinary word for a sports match.
