The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-j-b, which carries the sense of wonder and astonishment. It is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَعْجَبَ, "to please" or "to impress," so it names the state of being struck by something. Modern Arabic later fixed it as the standard term for a social media "like."
