Etymology

بَحْث comes from the Arabic root ب-ح-ث, whose oldest sense is to dig or scratch the ground. The Quran uses the verb for a crow scratching the earth (Q 5:31). From digging the meaning moved to searching, then to systematic inquiry. Today بَحْث is the ordinary word for both a casual search and formal research.
