Etymology
رِحْلَة comes from the root r-ḥ-l, which means to depart or set off. The same root gives رَحْل, a camel's saddle, and رَحيل, departure. The noun follows the fiʿla pattern, which often marks a single instance of an action, so at base it names one act of setting out. By extension it came to mean a trip of any kind and, in classical times, a written travel account.
