Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root ب-ذ-ل (b-dh-l), which carries the sense of giving freely and holding nothing back. In Classical Arabic it settled into the meaning of expending money, effort, or the self for a cause. From the same root grew ابتذال, which took a negative turn toward the trite and the vulgar, since what is given out too freely loses its worth.
