Etymology
The word is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of the Form V verb تَعَرَّفَ, "to get to know, to become acquainted." It builds on the triliteral root ع-ر-ف, which carries the sense of knowing and recognizing. The Form V pattern taKaRRuF adds a reflexive, gradual sense: coming to know something for oneself.
