Etymology

Maʿrifa is a verbal noun from the verb ʿarafa, to know or recognize, built on the Semitic root ʿ-r-f. The mīm prefix and the mafʿila pattern form a noun of the action: the act or state of knowing. The same root gives maʿrūf, what is known and so what is good, and taʿrīf, definition. The root leans toward knowing through familiarity rather than abstract study.
