Etymology

This is the passive participle of the verb عَرَفَ (ʿarafa), "to know, to recognize." It is built on the maf‘ūl template, which turns a root into "the one that is acted upon," so the literal force is "the thing that is known." The triliteral root ع-ر-ف is old and productive in Arabic, and it also yields the noun for knowledge and the word for custom.
