Etymology
This is the Form V (tafaʿʿala) verb from the Semitic root l-q-y, whose base meaning is to meet or encounter. Form II laqqā means to hand over or to teach, so the reflexive Form V means to take what is handed to one, that is, to receive. In Modern Standard Arabic the verb is common for receiving education, training, treatment, messages, and news.
