Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root هـ م م (h-m-m), which carries the sense of being a concern or weighing on someone. It is the feminine form of the active participle مُهِمّ, from the form IV verb أَهَمَّ, meaning to matter or to be of importance. Over time the feminine noun settled into the meaning of a matter that concerns someone, that is, a task or mission.
