Etymology

خَشِيَ comes from the triliteral Semitic root خ-ش-ي, which carries fear joined with awe. It follows the فَعِلَ pattern used for verbs of feeling and inner state. Classical Arabic and the Quran favor it for reverential fear, above all the fear of God. It contrasts with خافَ, a more general word for being afraid.
