Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root b-r-d, which carries the sense of cold. In the pattern faʿʿāl it named a vessel used to cool water, and the meaning later shifted to the pot used to brew and serve tea. The link to cold survives in the modern Gulf sense of refrigerator.
