Etymology
The word is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِحْتَرَمَ, "to respect." Both derive from the Semitic root ح-ر-م, which carries the sense of the sacred, the forbidden, and the inviolable. To be مُحْتَرَم is to be treated as something not to be violated. The same root gives Arabic حَرَام (forbidden) and حَرِيم (the protected women's quarters, source of English "harem").
