Etymology
بَرْمِيل entered Arabic as a loanword through Mediterranean trade, most likely from Italian barile or a related Medieval Latin form such as barillus. That Latin word is also the ancestor of French baril and English barrel, though its own origin before Latin is disputed and not securely traced. Once borrowed, Arabic fit the word to the native quadriliteral pattern فَعْلِيل and gave it the broken plural بَرَامِيل, so it behaves grammatically like a native noun even though its root is foreign.
