أَطْفَأَ comes from the Arabic triliteral root ط ف أ (ṭ-f-ʔ), which centers on the idea of a flame dying out. The base verb طَفِئَ describes something going out on its own, such as a fire losing its flame. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ adds a causative sense, so أَطْفَأَ means to make something go out, that is, to extinguish it. This root is native Semitic and has no established Indo-European origin.
