Etymology
مُرْتَفِع comes from the Arabic root ر-ف-ع (r-f-ʕ), which carries the sense of raising or lifting. It is the active participle of the Form VIII verb اِرْتَفَعَ (irtafaʿa), "to rise, to become elevated." Used as a noun, it names the raised landform itself rather than describing something else as high. This is a Semitic root, not an Indo-European one, so no PIE reconstruction applies.
