Etymology

حَفِظ comes from the Semitic triliteral root ح ف ظ, a pattern of three consonants that carries the core sense of guarding or keeping something intact. Arabic builds an entire family of nouns and verbs from this same root by changing the vowels and adding prefixes or suffixes around it. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, it has no PIE root or English cognate.
