Etymology
تاكسي is a direct borrowing of the English or French word taxi, which itself is a shortened form of taximeter. That word traces back to French taximètre, a blend of taxe (tariff) and mètre (meter), naming the metering device that set the fare. Arabic took the word into everyday speech in the early twentieth century as motorized cabs spread through Middle Eastern cities, and it never developed a native Arabic root.
