Etymology
كَرَى comes from the Arabic triliteral root ك ر ي, the same root behind كِراء, the noun for rent or a rental fee, and مُكارٍ, the old word for a man who hires out pack animals. Medieval Arabic dictionaries already record the verb with the sense of leasing land, animals, or property for a set payment. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root, and no cognates outside the Semitic family can be given here.
