Etymology

The word came into Arabic from Aramaic and Syriac haykla, meaning palace or temple. That word in turn goes back to Akkadian ekallu, palace, which was itself borrowed from Sumerian é.gal, literally big house. Arabic kept the sense of a grand building, especially a temple, and later widened it to cover any skeleton or supporting framework. This is a Semitic loan chain, not an Indo-European one.
