مَوْضِع comes from the Arabic root و-ض-ع (w-ḍ-ʿ), which carries the sense of putting or laying something down. Arabic forms nouns of place by adding the prefix م- to a verb root, and here that pattern gives مَوْضِع, literally the place where something is put. The same root produces the everyday verb وَضَعَ, to put or place. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
