Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral Semitic root ʔ-s-s, which carries the sense of founding or laying a base. Classical Arabic dictionaries treat أُسّ as a short, plain-pattern noun built directly on this root, close in meaning to the more common أساس. The same root later gave Arabic its verb for founding institutions and its word for a founder. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so no PIE root applies here.
