Etymology

The verb derives from the triliteral root ح-س-ن, which carries the sense of being good or beautiful. It is the Form V (tafaʿʿala) pattern built on that root, where the prefix ta- and the doubled middle consonant add a reflexive, gradual meaning. So the word literally conveys becoming good, that is, improving by degrees.
