Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root و-ع-د (w-ʿ-d), which carries the sense of promising and appointing. The base verb وَعَدَ means "to promise." The Form III pattern فاعَل adds reciprocity, so واعَد means two parties fixing a meeting between them.
