The word is built on the مِفْعال (mifʿāl) pattern, which marks a noun of time or place tied to the root's action. The initial root letter و shifts to ي because it is preceded by a kasra, the same shift seen in ميزان (scale, from و-ز-ن) and ميثاق (pact, from و-ث-ق). So مِيعاد literally denotes the time set for something promised.
