Etymology
Arabic صَلْصَة is a loanword, not a native triliteral-root formation. It came through Ottoman Turkish salça, itself borrowed from Italian salsa, from Vulgar Latin salsa, the feminine form of salsus, meaning salted. The word spread through Mediterranean trade and cooking, and Arabic simply adapted its sound and gave it a feminine ta marbuta ending.
