Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root r-sh-ḥ, whose basic sense is to ooze, seep, or sweat out. The Form II verb rashshaḥa extends this to filtering or straining, and from there to selecting or putting someone forward, since filtering separates out what is wanted. Murashshaḥ is the passive participle of that verb: someone who has been put forward, that is, a candidate. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root behind this word.
