Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ع-ق-ب (ʿ-q-b), which carries the core idea of following or coming after something, often at its heel. From this root Arabic built a family of words about sequence and consequence: عَقِب for the heel or the part that follows, and عُقْب for the end or result that follows an event. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no PIE root.
