Etymology
نفط is an old Semitic word for petroleum and naphtha, not a modern borrowing. It matches Akkadian naptu and Aramaic naftā, both used for the flammable oily substance seeping from the ground in Mesopotamia. Greek picked up the same word as náphtha, and that Greek form later gave English its word naphtha. So Arabic نفط and English naphtha are cousins that share an ancient Near Eastern ancestor, not a case of one borrowing from the other.
