Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ر ق م (r-q-m), which carries the sense of marking, inscribing, or numbering. From this root Arabic derives رَقْم (raqm), meaning number or digit. Adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ, which works much like English '-ic' or '-al', turns the noun into an adjective meaning 'pertaining to number.' In the twentieth century this adjective became the standard Arabic term for 'digital' in the computing sense, as opposed to analog.
