Etymology

The root f-ṣ-l carries the core sense of cutting, dividing, or deciding between things. Form VII verbs in Arabic, built on the pattern infa'ala, mark a reflexive or passive nuance, so infaṣala means 'to become separated' rather than 'to separate something'. Munfaṣil is the active participle of that verb, describing something that now stands in a state of separation. The same root surfaces in other Semitic languages with a related sense of splitting or dividing.
