Rahma comes from the Semitic root r-ḥ-m, which carries the sense of tender compassion. The same root gives raḥim, the word for womb, so the language ties mercy to the bond between a mother and her child. This root is shared across Semitic languages, not Indo-European ones, so there is no PIE ancestor.
