Etymology

مرحب comes from the Semitic root ر-ح-ب, meaning wide or spacious. Early Arabic hospitality formulas told an arriving guest they had found rahban wa sahlan, wide and level ground, in contrast to the harsh, narrow desert routes behind them. That phrase shortened over time into مرحبا and its bare form مرحب, now the standard word for welcome. The related verb رحّب, to welcome, was built on the same root to describe the act of making someone feel that ease.
