Etymology

ضائِع comes from the Arabic triliteral root ض-ي-ع (ḍ-y-ʿ), which carries the sense of being lost, perishing, or going to waste. It is the active participle of the hollow verb ضاعَ (ḍāʿa), "to be lost" or "to be wasted." The middle radical, a weak yāʾ, is replaced by a hamza in this participle form, which is a regular feature of hollow-root participles in Arabic.
