Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root kh-b-r, which carries the sense of knowing, experiencing, and reporting. Classical Arabic built the noun khabar, meaning news or a piece of information, from this root. The pattern ma-f'al turns a root into a noun of place, so makhbar literally names a place tied to khabar: a place where things are tested, examined, or reported on. In modern usage, especially in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, this settled into the everyday word for a scientific laboratory.
