Etymology

صَمَد comes from the Semitic root ص-م-د (ṣ-m-d), whose core sense is standing firm, holding fast, or being solid and unyielding. Classical dictionaries also record an early sense of deliberately turning toward or aiming for something, and from this the divine name الصَّمَد, the Eternal One to whom all creatures turn, later developed. The root is native to Arabic, and no established Indo-European cognates exist for it.
