Etymology

عاوَد belongs to the Arabic root ع-و-د (ʿ-w-d), which carries the basic sense of returning or going back to something. The verb is built on Measure III (the فاعَل pattern), a shape that often signals trying to do something or doing it back and forth, and it gives عاوَد the sense of taking an action up again. The same root produces عاد (to return), أعاد (to redo), and استعاد (to get back), and it is shared across Semitic languages.
