Etymology

The root ك و ر carries the sense of roundness and winding. Form II كَوَّر intensifies this into a full action: to roll something into a ball or to wind it round something else. Classical Arabic used it for winding a turban, and the Quran uses it for the sun being rolled up and for night wrapping over day. The common noun كُرَة, meaning ball, comes from the same root.
