Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral Semitic root ر-ح-ل (r-ḥ-l), meaning to journey, break camp, or depart. The فاعِل pattern turns the verb into an agent noun, so راحِل literally means one who departs. In the harsh life of the desert, this root also named the pack-saddle (رحل) and the journey itself (رحلة), since moving camp meant loading the camels. Modern Arabic later adopted the participle as a gentle way to say someone has died, as in one who has left this life.
